Bill: “I give a lot of answers in my songs. But it’s still driving people crazy.”

With the documentary Hinter die Welt producer Oliver Schwabe succeeds to show what’s beyond the world of Tokio Hotel. The movie premiered at the film festival Cologne last week. In the lecture Beuys will be Beuys Bill Kaulitz talks about development, his fears and self-confidence.

The twin brothers Bill and Tom Kaulitz founded Tokio Hotel 17 years ago. Since 12 years they’re in the public eye.  Bill Kaulitz reveals that nothing has changed within the band since then: “we were looking for a bass player and drummer, which would play the songs, Tom and I create.”

Nowadays the band still has the same working process, as the documentary reveals: Tom does the production works and creates new songs with Bill. Bill takes over all visual parts of the band, like light design, stage costumes and concepts for music videos, while Georg is responsible for live events, the booking and finances of the band.

“Georg couldn’t play bass at all.”

The fact that Bill and Tom choose Gustav Schäfer and Georg Listing as drummer and bass player is due to the fact that there weren’t much other possibilities in Magdeburg: “there were only these two guys.”

On top of that it wasn’t an obstacle for the twins that Georg was just learning to play the bass: “Georg couldn’t play bass at all. We all were really bad with our instruments.  Bust Georg was just starting to learn playing the bass for six month. He couldn’t play at all.”

In the opposite to Georg, there was Gustav Schäfer who had to show his drum skills: “Gustav had to do something like a casting for us. We were in our rehearsal space and Gustav played a Phil Collins song, if I remember correctly. This is how he came into the band. This is how everything started.”

Bill Kaulitz: “Gustav loves to play drums. But sometimes he wishes that there would be a wall in front of him, so nobody would be able to see him.”

Today Bill remembers clearly that there was no other option for him than doing music: “Doing music was always a serious thing for Tom and me. Georg had a lot of other hobbies back then. He was playing handball. But Tom and I always knew:  music is our life. Sure for Gustav and Georg it was amazing, when we released our music in 2005. They just accepted it as how it was. But for Tom and me this was always our number one plan… a total drive since we were kids. We never wanted to do something else.”

Kaulitz only sees one difference to when he looks back at the beginning of Tokio Hotel: “I just remember when we had our first performances when we were 13 years old. I was like: ok, give me a microphone! give me a stage! I want to go out there and perform.”
What Kaulitz doesn’t remember is how he formed his self-confidence at this time: “No idea where I got that from. I guess it came from the dynamic I have with Tom. We were always together. I knew I’m never alone.”

Nowadays Kaulitz has a different perspective on his life. As he sees himself with a huge backpack, which is filled with fears and bad experiences which he made through the past. At the same time he works on getting back a little bit lightheartedness every day: “Bringing back the lightheartedness, which we had when we started as band, is a challenge which I try to master every day. We always rather want to go back. We want to get away from this music industry shit. At some point it gets to complicated and then you kind of lose your creativity. You’re not good anymore in the essence of what you really want to do – music.”

But Kaulitz manages to leave everything behind, as soon as he gets home after a tour: “Flying back home… going out and then there’s not one idiot who gives a fuck about you. That’s the best thing.”

At the same time Bill Kaulitz  reveals that it was not always like that. When he moved to Los Angeles in 2010 he had to learn living life. Kaulitz remembers that his friends still make jokes about this time: “My friends are still teasing me with this. I remember the first time when I went out to party, I brought along a security guard and I always had a driver with me. In Los Angeles I continued to live the same life I was living in Germany. I just took it with me when we moved overseas, because I didn’t know another life.”

Kaulitz already had to deal with press and media, asking him about his sexuality, when he was 15 years old: “In Germany it’s still a question. People are still wondering: “who is joining his bed tonight? Who does he have sex with? Who does he bring home? Who does he fall in love with?”. But these were always questions I never gave a clear answer to. I feel like I give a lot of answers in my songs though. But it’s still a thing which drives people crazy. Nowadays a coming out isn’t really exciting anymore, cause everybody does it. But people still keep asking me these questions. It still drives them crazy not to know who’s sleeping in my bed tonight and I love that.”

Some laughters appeared when host Steve Blade quoted Bill Kaulitz’s twin brother Tom from the documentary: “I get everything from Bill, which other people are searching for in a relationship. So basically I just need somebody for the sexual part. And that’s something you can easily find.” Steve Blade asked Bill if this is a healthy attitude: “I don’t know. I guess others have to judge if it’s healthy. We sometimes wonder the same. We’re like one person and sometimes we don’t get how we are and how others see us. When we’re lonely, we’re together feeling alone. It never happens that one of us is pushing the other one up. When we’re feeling depressed, we’re feeling sad together. Everything always happens together. That makes it of course hard for a partner. Especially for Tom it’s more difficult. When I’m in love, it can happen that I’m just gone from today to tomorrow. I tend to do my own things then.”

What producer Oliver Schwabe impressed the most about the band was their energy and effort which they put in all their work: “they’re control freaks, which I found really interesting. It happens that somebody calls Tom out of the wardrobe, because Tom has to tell in which distance they need to place the barriers in front of the stage. And then you ask yourself: isn’t there somebody else to decide this? No! It’s always Tom! And he does this every day during the tour for month. This is something which impressed me a lot.”

Tokio Hotel: Back with a Bang

The German band return with a new electro-pop identity on their hard-won magnum opus, ‘Dream Machine’

It’s easy to forget that Tokio Hotel are somewhat of a veteran band. The German pop-rock quartet’s looks belie their experience of 16 years and 10 million records sold worldwide. Currently on tour to support their fifth studio album Dream Machine, the band’s schedule is tight but they are thrilled to be back on the road.

“The tour has been great so far. It was the 22nd show today—and no major fuck-ups,” says frontman Bill Kaulitz with a smile over Skype from Warsaw, Poland. The band are in the European leg of the tour and will head to Russia the next day. “We had so much fun. I think we’ve never been happier onstage.” Bill’s twin brother and the band’s lead guitarist Tom sits beside him while bassist Georg Listing is a silent but cheerful presence nearby. Drummer Gustav Schäfer stays out of the frame save for a quick ‘Thank you!’ when we congratulate him on the birth of his daughter.

Tokio Hotel’s shows on this tour are more intimate and artistic, designed to match the band’s new retro-synth sound on Dream Machine and help them connect more with the audience. However, as the conversation progresses, it becomes clear that the excitement around the record and touring was hard won; “With Humanoid and the last period of that time, we just weren’t engaged with what we did,” Kaulitz recalls about the exhausting tour for 2009’s Humanoid album. “It was more like a job, something we had to do and we weren’t passionate about it as much.” This led to the band’s infamous five-year hiatus. Usually considered career-suicide for most, the break helped the band build the bones of their current identity. While their big comeback with 2014’s Kings of Suburbia opened the gates to change, Tokio Hotel embraced it fully only on Dream Machine. Released in March, the album brims with mature lyricism, retro-synth and echoing falsettos, all wrapped up in glimmering, crisp production. All in all, it’s a more immersive experience than anything the band has done before.

In this exclusive interview, Tokio Hotel discuss their evolution, taking control of their own music and the journey to their magnum opus.

 

Is this tour more relaxed than ‘Feel It All,’ the tour for 2014’s Kings of Suburbia?

Bill: I think onstage we created a set where we could enjoy ourselves and enjoy the music a little more so it feels less stressed. I feel like the show before was a little more… let’s say powerful, while this one is dreamy.

Tom: But, musically it’s a little more challenging. The show in itself got more advanced: we have more instruments onstage, we have more keyboards, more laptops… So it got more technical. But the set has a lot of long breaks, long intros and we just play music.

How do you begin translating Dream Machine’s complex instrumentation and experience to a live show?

Bill: We were thinking of extending songs, going with the flow and making it longer than it is on the record. The album sounds cinematic so we wanted to support that with heavy light shows and big images, just get lost in the music and in the synth. Some parts we cut out—it’s always a journey to create the final set list for the tour. We start off just putting down our favorite songs, the songs we definitely want to play live, and we kind of section it off and have different sections to keep it exciting. The worst thing that could happen is when you get bored. So we found a nice mixture of new songs and old songs. I feel like it’s a good blend for all Tokio Hotel fans that discovered us as a band.

What’s your take on fans who don’t like your shift from rock to a more electro-pop sound?

Bill: I think it’s understandable because it’s so tough to let go of things and I know that’s because if you like a band once, you just want them to stay the same. But as an artist, as a musician, that’s impossible. At least for us, what is most important is that we are happy with our music and we are authentic with what we do. If we would stick to the same sound we were doing when we were 12 or 13 years old, that wouldn’t be our sound—that would be a money making machine, you know? And we are not about that. For us it’s about fun, it’s about enjoying ourselves and it’s about the music we love to make. So we’d rather lose people on the way but make the stuff we really love.

I noticed you guys were much happier when you released Kings of Suburbia [2014] and Dream Machine in comparison to when you released Humanoid [2009].

Tom: Yeah you noticed that because with Kings of Suburbia we started to write a lot more and do a lot more. I remember when we started to work on Kings of Suburbia with our producers and we heard the first demos, the outcome wasn’t what we thought was good. It didn’t feel right and so then out of frustration, we decided to build our own studio and really go into production even more than we did before. So that was like a turning point in our life and our career.

Bill: I think it was something that had to happen at one point and we were just like, ‘Okay enough. Now we take charge of everything.’ Artistically, I think we got too comfortable in our career; we got uninterested. With Humanoid and the last period of that time, we just weren’t engaged with what we did. It was more like a job, something we had to do and we weren’t passionate about it as much. It really took that change in our lives to be engaged again and be excited about the band and say, ‘Wait a second, this is our band. We love to make music, so let’s make music again.’ We took the time to go in the studio and make music that means something to us and not only go with A-list songwriters and producers and do something that’s hollow. We had to take that control in order to keep going and be excited about the band again.

When did you start working on Dream Machine? Did you have a clear idea of where you wanted to go when you began?

Tom: No we had no idea. We decided go back to the roots. We started off in January 2016 in Berlin and it was just the four of us going to the studio and no one else. We said, ‘Let’s do music like we used to do, just the four of us.’ We were in the studio for one or two months, just listening to music, writing new music. One of the first songs we wrote for this album was “Boy Don’t Cry.” In that time we wrote five to six songs that I took home to L.A., after that and I produced it. We finished writing the album in L.A. and then we came back [to Germany] and finished the record this year in January, right before we put it out.

That’s cutting it close!

Tom: Yeah! And when we announced the tour, we weren’t even sure if we were going to put out the record before because we didn’t know if we could finish it. It was really stressful, if I have to be honest.

Bill: It was a marathon. I think from December… Putting out [the first single] “Something New” in December and shooting that video, until today, it’s been a marathon. We’ve been working non-stop. But it worked out. We are totally happy with the outcome.

Now that the record is out and you’re performing it live, how has the reaction been from fans?

Tom: It’s been great. We’ve gotten great reviews on the album—I think the best reviews we’ve ever gotten for an album.

Bill: I feel like now people are more comfortable with us and they understand what the band is [about] now. Because with Kings of Suburbia, it was kind of a shock [to fans]. I feel like, with this record, we established the sound and what we are and how our live shows are.

Tom: The fans know what to expect and this is kind of our goal too. I just want to create something, a certain sound a certain signature to the band, you know what I mean? People know, ‘Okay, I know when I buy this next record from them, without even listening to it, I know what I can expect.’ I feel like we kind of started that with Kings of Suburbia and now did it with Dream Machine. We finally found that signature and that sound and we can move forward with it.

How does it feel being back on tour together? You both are based in L.A. while Georg and Gustav are in Germany—Gustav also just became a dad. Does it get harder to leave your private life each time?

Bill: I feel like now we understand this life and we accept it so much better than we were younger. For example, right now, you live in that bubble and you don’t see or hear anything else. We are in this Tokio Hotel bubble; we don’t know what time it is, we don’t know what day it is, it’s all about the show, the fans and it’s just about the music. Anything could happen and we wouldn’t hear about it. We enjoy that bubble, but only because we know we’re going to get out of this and we all have our private lives that we are looking forward to going back to. But the entire year is just going to be a tour year and we’re looking forward to just playing the record. And we’re going to shoot two more music videos and put two more singles out… So yeah, we’re going to work this record for a while. For us it’s really about all these different facets we have in our lives right now and we enjoy each one fully.

More good news: Tokio Hotel will soon be back in France! As you may already know, the German group is planning a new tour, with two dates in France (Lyon and Paris), the Dream Machine Tour. For the occasion, Fan2.fr had the chance to talk a little with them on the phone to ask them some questions! In the program, information on the tour to come, the next album, details about the solo career of Bill Kaulitz and full of compliments for the French fans ! Without further ado, it reveals everything they told us exclusively. So, happy with the return of Tokio Hotel?

Fan2.fr: Hello boys, it’s great to talk to you again, how are you?

Tokio Hotel : We’re fine, thank you, and you?

Fan2.fr: Great, thank you, even if the weather is not nice …

Tokio Hotel : It’s the same for us! Ah, Europe…!

Fan2.fr: You’re getting ready for a new tour in Europe, are you excited?

Tokio Hotel : Yes, a lot! We were on tour last year so we have been on the road for quite a while. We went to Russia, and it was awesome! We really enjoyed this tour; it’s probably the one we have preferred the most since the beginning of our career. We can no longer wait for the Dream Machine Tour! We knew even before writing a new album that we wanted to come back on stage, because what we like the most is sharing our music live, so it’ll be great!

Fan2.fr: What can we expect for this new tour?

Tokio Hotel : It’s going to be a big show! We are not really a traditional group on stage, who performs its music, speaks a little and leaves. We like to create real memories for the fans, we want to create a unique experience; it’s really our goal. We hope we will succeed in doing even better than before; we will really try to bring all this to the next level and make it a unique experience for everyone.

Fan2.fr: Why did you choose to have two dates in France?

Tokio Hotel : Because we love France so much! We love the people so much, their mentality, etc. This is the first country outside of Germany where we went to, and the fans here are very loyal. We love to come, really. We had an amazing experience during the last tour, more precisely in Paris.

Fan2.fr: Would you say you have a special relationship with your French fans? Why ?

Tokio Hotel : Yes, of course! We have had a special connection with them for years already. We feel like it has been this way since the beginning. Again, it was one of the first countries to listen to our music, including the songs in German, so we have a real connection with our French fans. Each tour, it is obvious to us that we must have a date in France!

Fan2.fr: And are you happy to go back to Germany?

Tokio Hotel : You know what, it’s kind of funny, because we do not even remember the last time we played in Stuttgart! We feel like it has been years since we set foot there, we did not even go there for the last  tour. It’ll be really special to do so many concerts over there.

Fan2.fr: Yes, you have planned 7 concerts in Germany! Was it important for you to have more shows in your homeland?

Tokio Hotel : You know, when planning a tour, we do not really choose everything. It has production obligations, and all that. But we wanted to play again in the cities where we have not been to for a while. Anyway, we will add more international dates later.

Fan2.fr: Bill, you launched a solo career. Can you tell us a little more? What can we expect from Billy is not okay?

Bill Kaulitz : I started my career in April. I released an EP, but I am not planning on releasing an album. I really put a lot of me in this project, all the dreams I had as an artist. There will be a music video that will come out in November, and another one for “California High”. I am eager to take them out! I will also continue into fashion in November, because I really like this and I want to continue on that path.

Fan2.fr: Why did you decide to go solo?

Tom Kaulitz : Because he has an ego problem! (laughs)

Bill Kaulitz : I had a personal vision of things; I wanted to do something very personal. I went through difficult times, with a very painful breakup, and obviously, I had to face this alone. This would have been out of place on a Tokio Hotel album. Besides, I dance in my new video and it would not really have fit with Tokio Hotel!

Fan2.fr: Why did you choose the name “Billy is not okay”?

Bill Kaulitz : Because I was not okay! When I was writing these songs, that Tom produced, I was seriously not well. It takes courage to admit such things, I think, but I wanted to be completely honest with my fans.

Fan2.fr: Yes, that’s bold!

Bill Kaulitz : Aww, thank you!

Fan2.fr: When will we be able to listen to the new album of Tokio Hotel?

Tokio Hotel : Very soon! We know we do not stop saying that, but we’re in the studio every day, so there are new things that are ready every day! We will release the songs before the tour, that’s for sure, but we do not really know when we will release the album.

Fan2.fr: Very good! Can we play a little game very quickly?

Tokio Hotel : Of course! With pleasure !

Fan2.fr: Great! How would you describe your future tour? Quiet and powerful, like Ed Sheeran, or energetic and colorful, like Beyoncé?

Tokio Hotel : Beyoncé, without hesitation! We love performing a big show. Plus, Georg has the perfect ass for that.

Fan2.fr: Bill, for your solo career, would you you say that you are more like Zayn, quiet and discreet, or like Justin Timberlake, sexy and loud?

Bill Kaulitz : I do not know, probably Zayn, because my songs have subjects that are rather serious … But at the same time you can dance to them for sure, so maybe Justin Timberlake … Is a mix of both possible?

Fan2.fr: Of course! And your relationship with the fans, is it rather like One Direction, passionate and connected, or like Taylor Swift, intimate and personal?

Tokio Hotel : I do not think Taylor Swift is very intimate with her fans …

Fan2.fr: Yes she is, particularly on Tumblr!

Tokio Hotel : Oh? Well, but I would still choose One Direction, because I’m not a fan of Taylor Swift! At the same time, we are intimate with our fans, and connected … So a mixture of both!

Fan2.fr: Finally, your new album, Dream Machine, will it be more like Miley Cyrus, crazy and lively, or like Selena Gomez, sweet and joyful?

Tokio Hotel : Definitely more like Miley Cyrus, but just wait and see!

Fan2.fr: Thank you Tokio Hotel for your time, good luck on your tour, and see you soon!

Fan2.fr : Vous vous préparez pour une toute nouvelle tournée en Europe, vous êtes impatients ?

Tokio Hotel : Oui très ! On a fait une tournée l’année dernière donc on a été sur les routes un bon moment, on est passé par la Russie, c’était génial ! On a vraiment beaucoup aimé cette tournée, c’était sans doute celle qu’on a préférée depuis le début de notre carrière. On n’en peut plus d’attendre Dream Machine Tour ! On savait avant même d’avoir écrit un nouvel album qu’on voulait revenir sur scène, parce qu’on veut partager notre musique en live avant tout, donc ça va être génial !

Fan2.fr : A quoi peut-on s’attendre pour cette nouvelle tournée ?

Tokio Hotel : On va vraiment faire le show ! On n’est pas tellement un groupe classique qui monte sur scène, fait sa musique, parle un peu et s’en va. On aime créer de vrais souvenirs pour les fans, une expérience unique, c’est vraiment notre but. On espère qu’on arrivera a faire encore mieux qu’avant, mais on va vraiment essayer d’amener tout ça au niveau supérieur et faire en sorte que ce soit une expérience unique pour tout le monde.

Fan2.fr : Pourquoi avez-vous choisi de faire deux dates de concert en France ?

Tokio Hotel : Parce qu’on aime trop la France ! On aime trop les gens, la mentalité… C’est le premier pays en dehors de l’Allemagne où on a été, les fans sont très loyales ici. On adore venir, vraiment. On a eu une expérience exceptionnelle lors de la dernière tournée, à Paris plus précisément.

Fan2.fr : Diriez-vous que vous avez une relation spéciale avec vos fans français ? Pourquoi ?

Tokio Hotel : Oui, bien sûr ! Cela fait des années années maintenant qu’on a une connexion spéciale avec eux. On a l’impression que c’est comme ça depuis toujours. Encore une fois, c’était l’un des premiers pays à écouter notre musique, y compris les chansons en Allemand, donc on a une vraie connexion avec nos fans français. A chaque tournée, c’est évident pour nous, on doit avoir une date en France !

Fan2.fr : Et vous êtes contents de retourner en Allemagne ?

Tokio Hotel : Tu sais quoi, c’est plutôt drôle, parce qu’on ne se souvient même plus de la dernière fois où on a joué à Stuttgart ! On a l’impression que ça fait des années depuis qu’on y a mis les pieds, on n’y est même pas allés pour la tournée d’avant, donc ça va être vraiment spécial de faire autant de concerts là-bas.

Fan2.fr : Oui, vous avez prévu 7 concerts en Allemagne ! C’était important pour vous de jouer plus de concerts dans votre pays natal ?

Tokio Hotel : Tu sais, quand on prépare une tournée, on n’a pas vraiment le choix sur tout. On a des obligations de production, et tout ça. Mais on voulait rejouer dans les villes où on n’est pas allés depuis longtemps. Quoi qu’il en soit, on va rajouter des dates plus tard, dans le monde entier.

Fan2.fr : Bill, tu as lancé une carrière en solo, est-ce que tu peux nous en dire un peu plus ? A quoi peut-on s’attendre de la part de Billy is not okay ?

Bill Kaulitz : Oui, j’ai lancé ma carrière en avril, j’ai sorti un EP, mais je ne prévois pas d’album. J’ai vraiment mis beaucoup de moi dans ce projet, tous les rêves que j’avais en tant qu’artiste. Il y aura une vidéo qui va sortir en novembre, et une également pour “California High”. Je suis impatient de les sortir ! Je vais aussi refaire un peu de mode en novembre, car j’aime vraiment beaucoup ça et j’ai envie de continuer dans cette voie-là.

Fan2.fr : Pourquoi as-tu décidé de faire du solo ?

Tom Kaulitz : Parce qu’il a problème d’égo ! (rires)

Bill Kaulitz : J’avais une vision personnelle de certaines choses, je voulais faire quelque chose de très personnel. Je suis passé par des moments difficiles, avec une rupture très douloureuse, et forcément, je devais affronter ça tout seul. Cela n’aurait pas été à sa place sur un album de Tokio Hotel. En plus, je fais un peu de danse dans ma nouvelle vidéo et ça n’aurait vraiment pas collé avec Tokio Hotel !

Fan2.fr : Est-ce que je peux te demander pourquoi tu as choisi le nom “Billy is not okay” (Billy ne va pas bien) ?

Bill Kaulitz : Parce que je n’allais pas bien, tout simplement ! Quand j’écrivais ces chansons, que Tom produisait, j’étais vraiment au plus mal. Il faut du courage, pour admettre ce genre de choses, je crois, mais je voulais être tout à fait honnête avec mes fans.

Fan2.fr : Effectivement, c’est courageux !

Bill Kaulitz : Aww, merci !

Fan2.fr : Quand est-ce qu’on pourra écouter le prochain album de Tokio Hotel, du coup ?

Tokio Hotel : Très bientôt ! On sait qu’on n’arrête pas de dire ça, mais on est en studio tous les jours, donc il y a de nouvelles choses qui sont prêtes tous les jours ! On sortira des chansons avant la tournée, ça c’est sûr, mais on ne sait pas vraiment quand on va sortir l’album pour de bon.

Bill Kaulitz : Je ne sais pas, probablement Zayn, parce que mes chansons ont des sujets plutôt sérieux… Mais en même temps on peut carrément danser dessus, donc peut-être Justin Timberlake… Un mélange des deux, c’est possible ?

Fan2.fr : Bien sûr ! Et votre relation avec les fans, plutôt comme les One Direction, passionnée et connectée ou comme Taylor Swift, intime et personnelle ?

Tokio Hotel : Je ne crois pas que Taylor Swift est très intime avec ses fans…

Fan2.fr : Si, elle est très connectée, notamment sur Tumblr !

Tokio Hotel : Ah bon ? Bien, mais je dirais quand même One Direction, parce que je suis pas très fan de Taylor Swift ! Mais en même temps, on est plutôt intimes avec nos fans, et connectés… Donc encore un mélange des deux !

Halle (Saale) In the summer of 2005, the teenagers Bill, Georg, Gustav and Tom, from Magdeburg, started a worldwide career with the group Tokio Hotel. Their first title Durch den Monsun has since become a hit, and made them famous from Russia to South America. “Dream Machine” is the tour with which they will come back to Leipzig in the spring of 2017. Anja Förtsch chatted with the brothers Bill and Tom Kaulitz, who have been living in Los Angeles for seven years.
 
Ten years ago, there wasn’t a day we would not hear something from you. It has been rather calm lately. How are you?
Bill Kaulitz: We are fine. We are always in the studio, and are very busy at the moment. There’s not a day we do not work on the album and on new songs, from early morning to late in the evening. We are in a race against the clock. If one does not do it, one would probably creep in the studio for years. Every band and every musician knows that.
 
Will the album be released this year?
Bill: Well, not in 2016 anymore (laughs) but there will be new music.
 
And a new tour?
Bill: It will start in March. We’ll start in London and we will include a lot of new materials. We’ll start in Europe for the first 30 gigs, then we will continue to South America. Starting in London worked well on our last tour, and that is why we keep it this way.
 
You will perform at the Haus Auensee in Leipzig. Have you deliberately chosen smaller venues?
Bill: We have already played in many clubs on the last tour. We’re doing a mix. Our music has changed a lot, it’s much more electronic than it used to be. That is why we transform even small clubs into real nightclubs and parties, to celebrate there. But we also played open airs when the weather would allow it.
Tom: We also played in a church in Hamburg, and did concerts in old theatres. We are always looking for venues where there is simply a cool clash between electronic night club and historical building. We want to keep everything fresh and special.
 
Your hit Durch den Monsun in 2005 has made you famous. Are you still playing it?
Bill: Absolutely! In fact only in English, but in Germany the fans sing in German and we end up being a minority. It is the same for me when I’m going to a concert; one wants to hear the songs with which the artists have become famous. “Monsoon” is part of the show, it still touches us after all those years. The song has changed our lives so radically that it is simply a part of us..
 
Bill, you have been going solo recently: your own music, a film in black and white, a photo book, you even wanted to go into fashion. Are you going to concentrate yourself less on music and more on other projects in the future?
Bill: We always do what we want. We find ourselves in all areas. For me, fashion and photography especially. I also love to do my own stuff and always keep it running side by side. Next month, I will finally bring my own fashion pieces on the market. There will soon be a movie in theatres about the band that you might also be interested in. There are definitely many projects on which we are working alongside. We are as a band at a point from where we only make the things we really want to do at 1000%. Everything else is always less cool. Uh, important. (Laughs).
Tom: Less fun (laughs)!
 
You have changed a lot too. Bill, you have already tried almost everything: long and short hair, black, blond, rose. Tom, you had dreadlocks at first, then rastas, now a bun and a beard. At which point fashion and style are important?
Bill: For georg, it is extremely important, for Tom and me it plays a supporting role (laughs). No, that’s nonsense, in fact it is a part of us. Fashion is my biggest passion with music. This is for me a form of expression, a form of freedom. Fashion, the costumes, the hair, one does not come without the other. I don’t see myself as someone who makes music around a campfire with a guitar. It is the same for the group. Our claim is to offer a real show. To create an experience that one can’t forget. And this always goes beyond the music.
 
You come from Magdeburg, and have been living for several years in Los Angeles. What links do you keep with your home country?
Bill: Tom and I always come back to Germany for Christmas, to see our family and friends. Since we are no longer living in Germany, we enjoy it quite differently. We now return with much more pleasure, and we are now inspired very differently by Germany. At the beginning of the year, we were in Berlin-Kreuzberg, where we laid the foundation for the new album in the studio. For the first time we were really inspired by a German city. So far we have always wanted to go to other countries and to other cities to create songs. But we also like to live anywhere. We love to travel and we want to go to India and Thailand. For us it is absolutely important to always be on the road.
 
Do you follow the political developments in the country from Los Angeles? The rise of the AfD and the right-wing populist?
Bill: Yes, absolutely! These are things that reach us and move us. This makes us angry and makes us sad and speechless. Especially when we see the results in Saxony-Anhalt, where we come from and where we grew up. The fact is the AfD in Germany fuels hatred by taking advantage of fear, and it’s happening everywhere in the world. In America too it’s the same, with Donald Trump. It affects us

Il n’y a pas une journée où nous ne travaillons pas sur l’album et sur de nouvelles chansons de tôt le matin à tard le soir. Nous nous sommes lancés dans une course contre la montre. Si on ne fait pas ceci, nous pourrions rester des années enfermés en studio. Chaque groupe et artiste connait cela.

Est-ce que l’album sortira cette année ?
Bill : alors en 2016, non, plus maintenant (rit) Mais il y aura de nouvelles musiques.

Et une nouvelle tournée ?
Bill : elle commencera en mars. Nous allons commencer à Londres et nous allons y inclure beaucoup de nouveaux matériaux. En Europe nous allons commencer par les 30 premières dates, ensuite nous continuerons en Amérique du Sud. Commencer à Londres, ça nous a porté chance lors de la dernière tournée, c’est pourquoi nous avons conservé cela.

A Leipzig vous jouerez à la Haus Auensee. Vous êtes vous aussi décidés pour des salles plus petites ?
Bill : nous avons déjà joué dans beaucoup de clubs lors de la dernière tournée. Nous faisons un mix. Notre musique a aussi beaucoup changé, elle est beaucoup plus électronique qu’elle ne l’a été avant. C’est pourquoi cela nous a parut évident de métamorphoser des clubs en vrais night-clubs et d’y faire la fête. Nous avons joué en plein air quand le temps le permettait.
Tom : nous avons aussi joué ans une église à Hambourg ou dans de vieux théâtres. Nous cherchons toujours des endroits où il y un lien génial entre des clubs électro et des bâtiments historiques. Nous voulons que tout reste nouveau et spécial.

Votre hit Durch den Monsun en 2005 vous a rendu célèbres. Est-ce que vous le jouez encore ?
Bill : absolument ! En fait seulement en anglais, mais en Allemagne les fans nous mettent parfois en minorité quand ils chantent en allemand. Il en est de même pour moi quand je vais à un concert : on veut entendre les chansons avec lesquelles les artistes sont devenus célèbres. Monsun est une partie du concert, qui nous remue toujours après toutes ces années. Cette chansons a tellement changé nos vies, qu’elle est devenue aussi une partie de nous.

Bill, vous vous êtes lancés en solo récemment: vos propres musiques, un film en noir et blanc, un livre photo, vous voulez aussi vous lancer dans la mode. Allez vous vous concentrer moins sur votre musique et davantage sur d’autres projets ?
Bill: nous ne faisons que ce que nous avons envie de faire. Nous vivons notre vie dans plusieurs domaines. Pour moi c’est la mode et la photo. Je m’occupe avec plaisir de mon projet solo et j’y travaille toujours en parallèle. Le mois prochain je sortirai enfin ma propre ligne de vêtements. Il y aura également bientôt un film sur le groupe au cinéma.
Il y a bien sûr beaucoup de projets dans lesquels nous pouvons nous développer et sur lesquels nous travaillons en parallèle. Nous sommes à un point dans le groupe, où nous faisons seulement les choses que nous avons envie de faire à 1000%.Tout le reste est toujours moins cool. Ah, important !
Tom : moins cool aussi !

Vous avez aussi beaucoup changé. Bill, vous avez déjà presque tout testé : longs cheveux, courts, noirs, blonds, roses. Tom, vous avez d’abord eu des dreads, ensuite des rastas, maintenant un chignon et une barbe. A quel point la mode et le style sont importants ?
Bill: pour Georg c’est extrêmement important, pour Tom et moi ça joue un second rôle (rit). Non, ce sont des bêtises, en fait ça fait partie de nous. La mode est ma plus grande passion avec la musique. C’est pour moi une forme d’expression, une forme de liberté. La mode, les costumes, la coiffure, l’un ne va pas sans l’autre.
Je ne me vois pas comme quelqu’un qui fait de la musique autour d’un feu de camp avec une guitare. Il en va de même pour le groupe. Notre revendication est de proposer un vrai show. De créer une expérience qu’on ne peut pas oublier. Et ça tient toujours à la musique.

Vous venez de Magdebourg, et vivez depuis plusieurs années à Los Angeles. Quels liens gardez-vous avec votre pays d’origine ?
Bill : Tom et moi revenons toujours en Allemagne pour Noël, pour voir la famille et les amis. Depuis que nous ne vivons plus en Allemagne, nous en profitions autrement. Nous revenons maintenant beaucoup plus avec plaisir, et nous sommes inspirés de manière très différente par l’Allemagne maintenant.
En début d’année nous étions à Kreutzberg à Berlin en studio, et nous avons posé les fondations du nouvel album. Pour la première fois nous avons été de nouveau inspirés par une ville allemande. Jusqu’à maintenant nous voulions toujours être dans d’autres pays ou villes pour écrire des chansons. Mais nous vivons partout facilement. Nous aimons les voyages et nous voulons absolument aller en Inde et en Thaïlande. Pour nous c’est vraiment important d’être toujours sur les routes.

Suivez vous aussi depuis Los Angeles l’évolution politique de l’Allemagne ? La montée de l’AfD ou des populistes de droite ?
Bill : oui absolument ! Ce sont des choses qui nous atteignent et nous remuent. Ça nous met en colère et nous rend triste et sans voix. Surtout quand on voit les résultats en Sachsen Anhalt, d’où nous venons et où nous avons grandi. Le fait que l’AfD en Allemagne alimente la haine en tirant profit de la peur des gens, ça se passe partout dans le monde. En Amérique aussi c’est la même, avec Donald Trump. Ça nous touche.

The other day, Bill Kaulitz, the leader of the German music group Tokio Hotel, secretly visited Russia. The singer presented to the public his artistic solo project ‘Billy – I’m not okay’ in Moscow and St. Petersburg, which includes an EP and a ‘love don’t break me’ photobook. Bill shared his impressions with Hello.
 
The Album was released on may 20th and is available on the internet. It includes 5 dance songs, talking about despair, heartbreak, and hope. The song ‘love don’t break me’ has its own music video, and a book that is visually complementary with story photographs from the short-movie.
 
Bill presented his book during his visit to Russia, in October of 2016.
 
Earlier book launches by Billy successfully took place in the United States, Mexico, Germany, France and Italy. For the events, Bill chose specific venues, since the heart of his project involved the relationship between arts, fashion and music. So, for the launch in Moscow, the musician chose to held it in a club, inviting guests in the night club “Бессонница” and, in the northern capital, the meeting was held at the rec center “Цифербург”.
 
Despite the huge interest from the fans, the tickets were limited to a certain number of people. Bill chose that in order to keep the privacy of the meeting, and to not be burdened by the presence of the press. Nevertheless, Hello managed to ask the musician a few questions and to take shots at the event.
 
For his Russian fans, bill had numerous surprises. Immediately before the trip to Moscow, the 27-Year-old artist shocked the public with a new style – he had had a short haircut and dyed his hair an extreme color. The singer decided to do this experiment for the sake of one of his new clips, which will come out in the near future. Guests of the two capitals had the opportunity to watch, before everyone else, the ‘not over you’ music video.
 
“I would not want to tell all the secrets already. I can only say that you’ll most likely see how I shaved my hair directly in the video”.
 
During the event, the musician signed all copies of the photobook, took pictures and gladly answered the questions of the public, telling people all about his plans. Already in the spring of 2017, Tokio Hotel will be back in Russia with new concerts, in 8 different cities, for their Dream Machine tour. Tickets for the forthcoming concerts are being sold at great speed, despite the fact that the group is not in a hurry to release a new album.
 
Bill hastened to reassure the fans and asked them to wait just a little bit longer: “Honestly, I don’t know when that day will come. We’re still working on the material. Most likely, the new album will be released in the beginning of 2017”, he explained. However, in addition to the group and solo project, he is working on a film and he and his twin brother Tom Kaulitz are in the process of writing a book.
 
“We have too many projects right now. Waking up in the morning, I don’t even know what I’ll be doing. As I travel the world with my solo project, my brother Tom produces new songs in the studio and Georg and Gustav also work like bees, although they are usually less involved. So rest assured: the tour we’ll go with the new material!”
 
Despite the fact that the theme of the evening was his solo project Bill shared some personal experiences, although fans hadn’t wished to upset the artist and thus hadn’t hurried to ask him questions concerning his recent breakup. However, we got an answer:
 
“Yes, I was very hurt by this relationship; I thought I had had finally found the one thing I had been looking for for so long. However, it has been a good experience. When you give yourself completely to your loved one, you can’t ever forget that. At the moment, I’m single. And very happy! Of course, to be happy is a choice. I can obviously be sad or I can despair, and hang around in bars, have one night stands; but I don’t encourage myself to do it. The next morning I feel down, and that is not something I appreciate. That’s why I tell people that I’m happy – and I really feel that I am. I’m ok and I would not be afraid to experience something like this again.”
 
The musician also noted that he likes to go to night clubs. Immediately after the event ended, bill went for a walk in the capital and visited the bar “Камчатка” and the club ARMA17. In St. Petersburg, the singer also took a walk on the hills.
 
“I didn’t randomly chose Moscow and St. Petersburg for my book launch. I’m in love with these cities. I like the mentality of the Russian people. I have met some rude people, but you are very hospitable. I was conquered by the architecture of St. Petersburg. When driving through the city, I can feel the history of each building. I don’t get this feeling in Los Angeles. I would definitely like to stay here, or to come here for a white Christmas.”

“Oui, j’ai été très blessé par cette relation ; je croyais que j’avais enfin trouvé la seule chose que je cherchais depuis si longtemps. Cependant, cela a été une bonne expérience. Quand vous vous donnez entièrement à votre bien-aimé, vous ne pouvez plus jamais oublier ça. Pour le moment, je suis célibataire. Et très heureux! Bien sûr, être heureux est un choix. Évidemment, je peux être triste ou désespéré, traîner dans les bars et avoir des coups d’un soir, mais je ne m’encourage pas à le faire. Le lendemain matin, je ne me sens pas bien, et ce n’est pas quelque chose que j’apprécie. C’est pour ça que je dis aux autres que je suis heureux – et je le suis. Je vais bien et je n’ai pas peur de refaire ce genre d’expériences.”
 
Le musicien a également noté qu’il aime se rendre dans les boîtes de nuit. Immédiatement après son lancement, Bill s’est promené dans la capitale, a visité le bar “Камчатка” et le club ARMA17. À Saint-Pétersbourg, le chanteur a aussi pris une promenade sur les collines.
 
“Je n’ai pas choisi Moscou et Saint-Pétersbourg au hasard, pour le lancement de mon livre. J’aime beaucoup ces villes. J’aime bien la mentalité du peuple russe. J’ai rencontré des gens impolis, mais vous êtes très accueillants. J’ai été conquis par l’architecture de Saint-Pétersbourg. Lorsque je conduis à travers la ville, je peux percevoir l’histoire de chaque bâtiment. Je n’ai pas cette sensation à Los Angeles. J’aimerais bien rester ici, ou bien revenir pour passer un noël blanc.”

The members of Tokio Hotel have a weakness for parties and nightclubs. Hotel with a club

It has been 7 years since Tokio Hotel stepped onto the auditorio Telmex stage when they participated in the MTV Video Music awards. Back then, their first 2 albums Schrei (2005) and Scream (2007) had placed them at the top of the world charts and their success was consolidated with Humanoid (2009) and Kings Of suburbia (2014). It is their first album in 5 years.

“The album is very inspired by Djs, night clubs, going out and partying. For the Feel It All World Tour we wanted a show that visually reflected the electronic sound of the album, we experimented with special lighting and costumes for shows that can be in small stages for Europe & USA, but also for larger venues like in Latin America”, explained Tom Kaulitz

Bill added they wanted a new album different from the rest; they took the electronic culture from their native Germany which enjoys a great deal of dancing clubs

“It is very different from our previous work and to be honest we wanted it that way. We took a long break and didn’t do anything for a while just to clear our heads and figure out what kind of music we wanted to make. We came to a point where we figured out we all like to dance and party, that was the point”

With Kings Of Suburbia they explore nightlife as a way of life, they talk about the dance floor, the hangovers, enjoying yourself and also the excess. The video for their song “Feel It All” was censured for having explicit content about drug use which is part of the lyrics “feel it all, don’t look back, the time is now”, it says.

NTR questioned the band whether the way they perceive their nights out similar to how Ricky Martin defines it in Livin’ La Vida Loca. Tom argued, “We do not see it like Ricky Martin , but yes we love the nightclubs, maybe too much to be honest” (laughs)

Tokio Hotel went back to bizarre fashion with futuristic touches. Live, Bill wears a costume of a king, while Tom, Georg Listing (bass) and Gustav Schäfer (drums) appear as characters in a decadent world where the sounds of electronic music prevail, geometric projections and colored lights.

For their show in Mexico, the German band will party in peace, but aim to create a fun time with the songs from its new album and the success of previous albums.

“We have a part in the show where we bring fans on stage to sing, that is always a great moment. The fans also like the calmer moments, in the middle we sing old songs acoustically”, explains Bill. “There is a part in Kings Of Suburbia where everything focuses on Tom as a guitarist, he does a solo and it is one of the highlights of the entire show”, confirmed Georg.

“We will play the new album, bring lots of lights, costumes and basically the idea is to transform the venue into a club and have a big party with our fans, that’s what we’ll do. Th entire set is very electronic so we are confident they’ll feel like they’re in our club and they’ll come party with us”, said tom.

Grow with their fans

Even though the members of Tokio Hotel do not exceed 30 years old, they still have a young spirit. Bill no longer has long and puffy hair, Tom no longer has dreads, Georg too no longer has long hair and Gustav wears glasses but they keep the idea of fun and making their fans crazy

“I think we continue to be the same kids as before, but of course we can’t remain that way forever. We started at 15 and now we are 25, we can’t avoid it, we get older, we don’t necessarily have to like it, but yes. Most of our fans grew up with us & Tokio Hotel has been in their lives a long time, we’ll continue to be by their side, we’ll grow old together”, said Bill, who besides creating his own unisex clothing line, together with his brother, will create a book as part of their artistic restlessness they have tried to contain as they mature.

Tom thanked their fans for their patience and waiting 5 years for an album, especially in Guadalajara, for the 7 years they had to wait for their first live show in that city

« Ils sont définitivement les plus amusants, nous aimons faire des concerts en Amérique pour la folie et pour toute l’énergie qu’il y a. En réalité, ils sont l’un des meilleurs du public du monde », a déclaré le chanteur du groupe allemand qui entamera sa tournée par le continent américain en juillet avec des dates aux Etats-Unis, et à partir d’aout, il visitera la Colombie, le Pérou, l’Argentine, le Brésil et clôturera avec trois concerts au Mexique début septembre : Mexico City, Guadalajara et Monterrey.

Hôtel avec boite de nuit

Il s’est déjà écoulé sept ans depuis la première fois que Tokio Hotel a foulé la scène de l’Auditorio Telmex, où il avait participé aux MTV Video Music Awards. A cette époque, leurs deux premiers albums Schrei (2005) et Scream (2007) les avaient placé en tête des listes de popularité dans le monde et leur succès a été consolidé avec Humanoid (2009) et Kings Of Suburbia (2014) est leur premier album inédit en cinq ans.

« L’album est très inspiré par les DJs, les boîtes de nuit, les sorties et les fêtes. Pour le Feel It All World Tour, nous voulions un spectacle qui refléterait visuellement le son électronique de l’album, nous avons testé un éclairage spécial et des costumes pour les concerts qui pourraient se présenter sur de petites scènes en Europe et aux Etats-Unis, mais aussi dans des plus grands spectacles comme ceux qui se dérouleront en Amérique Latine », a déclaré Tom Kaulitz.

Bill a ajouté qu’ils avaient souhaité faire un album inédit différent des précédents, ils ont donc repris la culture électronique enracinée dans leur Allemagne natale, qui bénéficie d’une grande quantité de dancing.

« Il est très différent de nos précédents travaux et nous le voulions ainsi pour être franc. Nous avons pris une longue pause et nous n’avons rien fait pendant un moment pour se détendre et pour savoir quel genre de musique nous voulions faire. A un moment, nous avons réalisé que nous aimions tous danser et que nous aimions faire la fête, c’est ça qui a lancé la machine ».

Kings Of Suburbia explore le plaisir nocturne comme le mode de vie, parle de la piste de danse, de la gueule de bois, de prendre du bon temps et des excès. Le clip Feel It All a été censuré pour présenter des images explicites sur la consommation de drogues, afin de souligner une partie des paroles : « Ressent tout cela, ne regarde pas en arrière. Le temps est maintenant », a-t-il dit.

NTR a demandé au groupe pop si leur façon de percevoir les nuits de fête est similaire à celle définie par Ricky Martin comme « Livin’ La Vida Loca ». Tom a déclaré ; « Nous ne la voyons pas comme Ricky Martin, mais oui, nous aimons les boîtes de nuit, peut-être un peu trop, pour être honnête ». Tout le monde rit.

La fête continue

Tokio Hotel est revenu à la mode extravagante avec des touches futuristes. En live, Bill brille dans un costume de roi, tandis que Tom, Georg Listing (basse) et Gustav Schäfer (batterie) apparaissent comme des personnages d’un monde décadent où règnent les sons de la musique électronique, les projections géométriques et les lumières colorées.

Pour les concerts au Mexique, le groupe allemand va continuer à faire la fête, mais prévoit de créer un moment de plaisir avec des chansons de leur nouvel album et des succès de leurs précédents albums.

Les gens aiment aussi le moment plus calme, par le biais d’un dialogue, nous chantons de vieilles chansons en acoustique », dit Bill. « Il y a un moment sur Kings Of Suburbia où tout est axé sur le rôle de Tom en tant que guitariste, où il fait son solo, et c’est l’un des meilleurs moments du concert », a affirmé Georg.

La setlist complète est très électronique, nous sommes donc assurés que nous nous sentirons comme dans notre club et que nous allons nous amuser », a déclaré le guitariste Tom Kaulitz.

Ils ont grandit avec leurs fans

Bien que les membres de Tokio Hotel ne dépassent pas 30 ans, ils ont encore l’esprit adolescent. Bill n’a plus les cheveux longs et ébouriffés, Tom n’a plus de dreadlocks, Georg a également coupé ses cheveux longs et Gustav a des lunettes, mais ils ont gardé l’idée de s’amuser et de rendre fous leurs fans.

« Je crois que nous sommes encore les mêmes jeunes qu’avant, mais bon, il est clair que nous ne pouvons pas continuer comme ça éternellement. Nous avons commencé à 15 ans et nous en avons maintenant 25, nous ne pouvons pas l’éviter, nous vieillissons, ce n’est pas forcément grave, mais c’est un fait. La plupart des fans ont grandi avec nous et Tokio Hotel a été présent dans leur vie pas mal de temps, nous allons continuer à leur côté, nous grandirons et vieillirons ensemble », a déclaré Bill, qui a également créé sa propre marque de vêtements unisexe et qui prépare, en compagnie de son frère, un livre qui fait part des inquiétudes artistiques qu’ils ont cherché à canaliser pendant leur chemin vers la maturité.

Tom a tenu à remercier leurs fans pour avoir eu la patience d’attendre cinq ans un album, et remercie en particulier ceux de Guadalajara, qui ont dû attendre sept ans pour avoir un premier concert dans leur ville.

« Nous apprécions beaucoup qu’ils aient été patients et qu’ils aient attendus le nouvel album. Surtout de nos jours, vu que l’industrie de la musique va si vite et que tout arrive sans que nous nous en rendions compte. C’est un privilège d’avoir une base de fans si forte et sympa. Les latinos sont très intenses et nous aimons l’énergie qu’ils nous donnent sur scène, nous en sommes ravis et c’est très amusant. Vous avons hâte de jouer ce spectacle, je pense que ça sera intense et que nous aurons beaucoup de plaisir », a conclu Bill Kaulitz.

Le chanteur de Tokio Hotel Bill Kaulitz parle dans cette interview du courage de changer, de leurs nouveaux fans masculins, de sa vie à Los Angeles. Et de sa nostalgie pour le pain noir allemand.

« Wirtschafts Woche » : Mr. Kaulitz, vos cheveux sont blond platine et courts. Vous portez un jeans noir, des chaussures vernies et un poncho – par rapport à d’habitude, votre look est assez sage.
Bill Kaulitz : Je porte souvent des chaussures hautes, ça provoque toujours des débats, du moins en Allemagne. Mais oui, j’ai un look différent d’il y a cinq ans. J’adore la mode et je ne pourrais pas avoir la même coiffure pendant des années. J’ai besoin de changement.

Wiwo : Les cheveux longs et noirs ont longtemps été votre marque de fabrique. N’est-ce pas dangereux de changer ainsi ?
Bill : C’est vrai que chaque fois que je change de coiffure ou que j’ai un nouveau tatouage, cela provoque un tollé. En tant que fan, on apprécie un groupe pour sa musique et le look de ses membres – et quand cela change, ça ne nous plaît pas. Mais je vais toujours évoluer et changer, et, chaque fois, cela ne plaira pas à certains fans. En tant qu’artiste, il faut pouvoir prendre ce risque.

Wiwo : Avez-vous honte de votre ancien look ?
Bill : Non. Je ne me promènerais plus comme ça aujourd’hui, mais à l’époque, je voulais ressembler exactement à cela, et c’était donc authentique et juste à ce moment-là.

Wiwo : Vous étiez auparavant un marginal, qui faisait de la musique pour les marginaux. C’est un petit public-cible – pourquoi cela a-t-il quand même fonctionné ?
Bill : J’ai écrit notre premier succès, « Durch den Monsun », dans notre salle de répétition à Magdebourg, parce que c’est exactement ce que je ressentais à l’époque. Et je ne savais pas que beaucoup de gens avaient ressenti la même chose. Les maisons de disques non plus, et elles nous ont d’abord opposé un refus. Pour le nouvel album « Kings of Suburbia », je ne me suis pas non plus dit : « Mh, à quel public-cible est-ce que je vais m’adresser ? » Je me suis tourné vers ce que je veux écouter en ce moment. Je dois d’abord me rendre heureux et ensuite espérer que cela rende les autres heureux aussi.

Wiwo : Qui écoute Tokio Hotel aujourd’hui?
Bill : Lorsque nous avons sorti notre premier CD à 15 ans, nos fans avaient le même âge que nous, ou étaient plus jeunes. Beaucoup d’entre eux ont grandi avec nous, et ont également changé. Mais de nouveaux fans se rajoutent également. Nous venons de jouer un concert à L.A. dans un club qui ne laisse entrer que les personnes ayant plus de 21 ans. Nous craignions que certains fans ne puissent pas entrer ; mais nous avions tort. La plupart de nos fans sont aujourd’hui aussi dans la vingtaine. Et des garçons viennent pour la première fois à nos concerts.

Wiwo : A quoi est-ce dû ?
Bill : C’est d’abord grâce à la musique que nous jouons aujourd’hui. Notre son a beaucoup changé avec les années. Mon frère jumeau Tom et moi avons 25 ans, notre collègue Gustav vient de se marier – nos goûts et nos intérêts ont changé durant ces dix dernières années. Et pour les garçons, le fait qu’un groupe soit cool ou non est déterminant. Auparavant, les garçons ne nous écoutaient pas, parce que nous étions trop jeunes et pas assez cool pour eux.

Wiwo : « Kings of Suburbia » est le premier album après cinq ans, et résonne du son de la ville et des clubs – une si longue pause et un style musical totalement différent causent souvent la fin des groupes adolescents.
Bill : Absolument – tout le monde nous a fortement déconseillé de nous accorder une si longue pause, parce que c’est contraire à toutes les règles du milieu de la musique. Mais nous n’avions plus envie et avons décidé de prendre le risque. A l’époque, je ne savais plus quelle musique je voulais faire. Et quand on ne fait un album que pour faire plaisir à son public, ça ne marche pas.

Wiwo : Tokio Hotel est une marque allemande qui fonctionne souvent mieux à l’international que dans son pays d’origine. Pourquoi ?
Bill : En Allemagne, nous n’avions qu’un public de niche. « Durch den Monsun » est resté durant des semaines dans les charts, et pourtant, aucune station de radio ne l’a jamais jouée. Elles avaient peur de causer une polémique, ou de perdre des auditeurs. Dans d’autres pays, nous avons été appréciés par un public plus large – et nos chansons étaient alors jouées à la radio. De plus, tout ce qui concerne les concerts est difficile en Allemagne. Un spectacle réduit avec chanteur et guitariste fonctionne bien, mais pas les grands concerts. Et quand on roule en Lamborghini dans un clip musical, tout le monde trouve ça stupide. Aux Etats-Unis au contraire, les gens trouvent ça génial.

Wiwo : Vous vivez depuis cinq ans à Los Angeles. Quels produits allemands vous manquent ?
Bill : Les mélanges Maggi et le chocolat Ritter-Sport. Et les produits de boulangerie allemands. Surtout le pain noir et la tarte aux prunes.

Je dois vous poser cette question : Vous avez jouer devant un public composé d’un million de personnes à Berlin et la nuit dernière, quand je vous ai vu ici jouer au « Viper Room » de Los Angeles, vous avez jouer devant… environ 200 personnes…
Bill : Oui (rit).
Katie Hasty : Préféreriez-vous jouer dans une salle de 20 personnes, dans une salle de 2 000 personnes ou dans une salle de 20 000 personnes ?
Bill : Hm… je choisirais probablement la grande salle.
Gustav : Oui. Oui.
Katie Hasty : La plus grande salle possible ?
Bill : La plus grande salle possible sur le long terme, mais j’ai l’impression, vous savez, que les concerts plus petits, comme celui-là, reste toujours un plaisir, donc… hm… je veux dire, j’aime… je veux dire, nous aimons toujours jouer, nous aimons être sur de grandes scènes devant une énorme foule mais hm… c’est vraiment agréable de jouer devant une foule intime composer de quelques personnes, c’est tout simplement différent, vous pouvez même comparer cela et la nuit dernière, nous avons eu un concert en acoustique.
Gustav : Oui.
Bill : C’était amusant. C’était juste différent et amusant et la première partie de notre tournée se fera aussi dans de petites salles et nous allons transformer tout ça en club et en boite de nuit et nous allons emmené tous nos fans dans une soirée, donc, je pense que ça va être amusant, ça va être une toute nouvelle expérience et hm… oui.
Katie Hasty : Avez-vous un quelconque rituel avant de monter sur scène ? Faites-vous quelque chose pour calmer les nerfs et être serein ?
Bill : Bien hm… nous sommes tous ensemble dans une salle dans les coulisses et c’est là que nous devenons super nerveux, donc chacun d’entre nous est surexcité…
Gustav : Nous devenons nerveux ensemble.
Bill : Nous devenons nerveux ensemble et puis, c’est… c’est la folie et nous voulons… tout le monde veut sortir de la salle car nous sommes tellement gamins et tellement idiots et c’est tout simplement stupide ! Et ensuite, juste avant le concert, nous activons nos – ce qui est très kitsch aussi – (Gustav rit) nous activons notre pouvoir de Power Ranger, donc nous mettons nos mains ensemble et nous activons nos pouvoirs, je ne sais pas, c’est quelque chose que nous faisons à chaque fois.
Katie Hasty : Ca change quelque chose quand vous dites que vous activez vos pouvoirs de Power Rangers ?
Bill : Non. Nous le faisons à chaque fois, nous disons : « Activons nos pouvoirs de Power Ranger – Activé ! », et c’est tout !
Gustav : C’est ça !
Katie Hasty : Faites-vous la même chose quand vous vous rendez au studio ?
Bill : Non, nous ne le faisons que quand nous jouons un concert. Au studio, c’est bien plus détendu. Parfois, nous n’y faisons rien. Il y a des jours où nous trainons simplement et… vous voulez écrire une chanson, faire quelque mais il n’y a rien qui se passe, alors nous commandons une pizza… nous sommes en quelque sort paresseux.
Gustav : Nous sommes très paresseux.
Bill : Oui. Au studio ou dans la salle de répétition… à chaque fois que nous y allons pour préparer quelque chose, nous finissons par regarder la télé, par commander de la nourriture et…
Gustav : Nous fumons.
Bill : Nous fumons, oui.
Gustav : Nous fumons, nous mangeons, nous dormons.
Katie Hasty : Qu’est-ce que vous avez ressenti quand vous avez entendu pour la première fois votre chanson à la radio ?
Bill : En fait, c’est drôle car… quand notre premier single est sorti, personne ne le jouait à la radio, pas même en Europe. Personne ne le jouait et il a fallut un certain temps avant que ça ne change… en fait, pour cet album…
Gustav : Pour cet album…
Bill : Ca a été la première fois…
Gustav : La première fois, oui.
Bill : … que nous avons entendu notre chanson à la radio car en général, les gens devaient regarder le clip sur Internet pour pouvoir l’écouter. Nous avons eu quelques chansons à succès même si personne ne les jouaient à la radio.
Gustav : La première fois que nous avons entendu notre chanson était à Berlin je crois, quand nous étions en train de promouvoir notre tournée.
Bill : Oui, c’est exact.
Gustav : Dans la voiture.
Bill : Nous étions dans la voiture quand nous avons entendu notre chanson « Love Who Loves You Back ». C’était vraiment excitant.
Katie Hasty : Maintenant que nous sommes dans la partie « compilation de chansons », pouvez-vous recommander à notre public trois chansons pour lesquelles vous dites : « Il faut vraiment les écouter ! » ?
Bill : Très bien. C’est très difficile. Je dirais… je ne connais pas son nom, ça doit être « Ki », « Kia »…

Bill : Kiesza ? Oui ! J’aime beaucoup son album. Je veux dire… « Hideaway » est probablement la chanson que tout le monde a déjà entendu car… je veux dire, allez écouter l’album car il y a de très bonnes chansons dessus et laissez-moi voir…
Gustav : Pour moi, c’est Joe Bonamassa avec la chanson « Mountain Time ».
Bill : Oh, et puis, vous devez écouter « Do It Again » de Robyn. C’est vraiment une bonne chanson.

Katie Hasty : Quand vous voyagez… je veux dire, vous êtes comme une petite famille et vous voyagez comme une famille pendant la tournée. Quelle est la première chose pour laquelle vous vous battez ?
Tom : Je ne sais pas. Je veux dire… je me bats la plupart du temps avec Bill car nous nous disputons pour à peu près tout. Il faut dire que nous sommes jumeaux, donc nous avons tous les deux une très forte opinion, donc quand nous avons la même opinion, c’est bien et c’est vraiment mauvais pour tous les autres, mais si nous avons une opinion différente, ça devient très pénible.
Georg : Ne vous mettez pas entre eux.
Tom : Exactement.
Georg : C’est très dangereux.
Tom : Ca peut partir de n’importe quoi. Je veux dire… je ne sais pas… vous savez, la plupart du…
Georg : Le café le matin par exemple.
Tom : Le café le matin et… et beaucoup par rapport au groupe, par rapport à ce que nous devons faire, et si nous devons faire cette interview ici… vous voyez le genre. (rit)
Katie Hasty : Oui, je vois.
Georg : C’est toi qui a essayé en réalité. (rient)
Tom : Ouais, j’ai essayé.
Katie Hasty : Oh, très bien. Je pensais que c’était : « il faut vraiment faire cette interview » (Tom rit). La nuit dernière, je vous ai vu devant une foule de 150/200 personnes. Ce n’était pas une grande foule mais dans des circonstances comme celle-ci, vous devez entendre des choses étranges que les gens hurlent. Quelle est la chose la plus étrange que vous ayez entendu jusqu’ici ?
Tom : Je ne sais pas. Vous devez nous le dire car nous avons des oreillettes, donc je suis sensé ne rien entendre. Je ne regarde que ma guitare, elle est incroyable.
Katie Hasty : Oui, oui, oui. L’ignorance est absolue quand vous jouez.
Tom : Exactement. Je n’entends rien. Par contre, j’ai déjà vu des seins, mais j’ai juste vu…
Georg : De mon côté, non ?
Tom : Non, c’était de mon côté. (rient)
Katie Hasty : Avez-vous déjà eu un débat du genre : « Qui dans le groupe a vu le plus de seins ce soir » ?
Georg : Oui.
Tom : Oui. C’est le grand sujet sur lequel nous nous battons tout le temps.
Katie Hasty : Très bien. Tout le temps ? C’est un peu comme avec les Beatles.
Tom : Exactement.
Katie Hasty : J’ai vu le clip de votre actuel single, que la radio KROQ diffuse beaucoup actuellement. C’est un clip sensuel et sexy. Quels sont vos projets futurs pour vos prochains clips ? Avez-vous de grands fantasmes que vous aimeriez réaliser ?
Tom : Je ne sais pas pour ce qui est du fantasme… je veux dire, un des fantasmes a été de faire une orgie comme celle que nous avons faite sur « Love Who Loves You Back », c’était quelque chose que… c’est surtout Bill a toujours voulu faire cela, et nous aimons tous le film qui a inspiré ce clip, qui est le film allemand « Parfum », et hm… ouais, je ne sais pas… je veux dire, nous avons parler de ça hier…
Georg : Oui.
Tom : … car nous avons de drôles d’idées pour le nouveau clip mais…
Georg : Mais je ne peux rien dire.
Tom : … je ne peux rien dire.
Katie Hasty : Vous ne pouvez rien nous dire.
Tom : Oui. C’est… oui, je pense que je ne peux pas en parler car nous ne savons pas si nous allons le faire car ça pourrait choquer en fait.
Katie Hasty : Qu’est-ce qui pourrait choquer ? Nous pouvons en parler ici.
Tom : Je sais. Ca serait quelque chose de vraiment grossier et amusant et… et je pense que c’est amusant, je ne sais pas si les gens penseraient de la même façon, peut-être que certains seraient plutôt dégoûter. Donc, je sais que le prochain single que nous sortirons sera « Feel It All ».
Katie Hasty : Ok.
Tom : Nous allons tourner le clip très bientôt. Nous sommes actuellement en train de nous creuser les méninges.
Katie Hasty : Est-ce que le tournage aura lieu ici, à Los Angeles ou peut-être en Allemagne ?
Tom : Nous allons quitter Los Angeles la semaine prochaine, donc il se peut… je pense que nous allons tourner le clip à Berlin.

Just Jared: LA nightlife inspired your new album, Kings of Suburbia. Are there certain places in LA that you love and go to often?

Bill Kaulitz: I feel like we have phases, where we go somewhere a lot, and then we don’t go there anymore. The only place we always go, like Tom, you are just not that into nightclubs…

Tom Kaulitz: I am, I’m just not so much into dancing.

Bill: Yeah, but we kind of always like to drink a lot and talk afterwards, and listen to some music. Soho House is just a classic where we always go. And then it changes. I liked Sound for awhile.

Tom: And Hyde, once a week, at least.

Bill: I love Warwick. And nightclubs, I don’t know. There were those pop up parties downtown, they were cool. We went out so much, I don’t remember!

JJ: What are your favorite lyrics from your single, “Love Who Loves You Back”?

Bill: “Love who loves you back,” probably. (laughs) Because that is what it really is. I feel like we all shouldn’t think about who we love, because we can’t control it anyway. And I feel like so many people try that, but I feel like it’s beautiful that we can’t control it. We all tend to try to have control of our heart but I feel like in the end, we really can’t. And that’s for me, what the song is about also. Just love who loves you back, just enjoy love.

JJ: Do you guys feel like you fall in and out of love lots of times? Can you love multiple people at the same time?

Bill: I mean, yeah. Tom loved a lot of girls every other night when he was younger. (laughs) He was, you were pretty wild. Now he kind of settled. I feel like that was when he was 16, 17.

Tom: Everybody does at that age.

Bill: I didn’t.

Tom: Yeah you did.

Bill: I didn’t. I feel like I’m the opposite. When I fall in love, I fall hard. And then I’m sure about that. But it takes a while ’til that happens. So yeah, I’m not like that, I’m not the one night stand kind of guy.

JJ: Do you think there’s one person in the world that you’re meant to be with? Or do you think there’s multiple people in the world you could be happy with?

Tom: Oh yeah, I think there’s multiple people. That’s what I think.

Bill: I don’t know. I feel like it’s very hard to find someone you love in and out, your soul mate, and someone you want to spend the rest of your life with. I feel like you should be, you have to be very heavy because there are billions of people out there and I just feel like, to find that person, that’s super hard. And I feel like you have to be lucky. I feel like people think they might find the right person, and then they think they are so in love, until they really meet their love. So, I feel like you’re not.

Tom: I feel like it could happen to you a bunch of times. So many people are in serious relationships and are really in love…

Bill: But I’m saying you’re one person.

Tom: Yeah, I don’t know. This is just a dream scenario…

Bill: That’s not a dream scenario, it exists. I feel like it exists. I believe in that.

Tom: Well, no. Of course it’s possible to find the person you love and you may spend the rest of your life together, but you never know.

Just Jared : La vie nocturne de LA a inspiré votre nouvel album, « Kings Of Suburbia ». Y a-t-il certains endroits à LA où vous aimez vous rendre souvent ?
Bill Kaulitz : J’ai l’impression que nous avons des phases, où nous nous rendons pleins de fois quelque part, et après, nous ne nous y rendons plus. Il y a un seul endroit où nous nous rendons toujours, par contre Tom, tu n’es pas si intéressé par les boîtes de nuit…
Tom Kaulitz : Si je suis intéressé, je ne suis juste pas tellement intéressé par la danse.
Bill : Oui, mais nous aimons toujours boire beaucoup et parler après, et écouter de la musique. Le Soho House est un classique où nous nous rendons toujours. Et puis ça change. J’ai aimé le Sound pendant un moment.
Tom : Et le Hyde, une fois par semaine, au moins.
Bill : J’aime le Warwick. Et les boîtes de nuit, je ne sais pas. Il y avait ces soirées « pop up » au centre-ville, elles étaient chouettes. Nous sommes tellement sortis, je n’arrive pas à me souvenir de tout !
JJ : Quelles sont vos paroles préférées de votre single « Love Who Loves You Back » ?
Bill : « Love Who Loves You Back » probablement. (rit) C’est vraiment de cela qu’il s’agit. J’ai l’impression que nous ne devrions pas nous soucier de qui nous aimons, car nous ne pouvons pas contrôler cela. Et j’ai le sentiment que beaucoup de gens essaient de faire ça, mais je trouve que c’est magnifique de n’avoir aucun contrôle sur l’amour. Nous avons tous tendance à essayer de contrôler notre cœur, mais j’ai l’impression qu’au bout du compte, nous ne pouvons vraiment pas le faire. Et cette chanson s’adresse aussi à moi. Aime juste la personne qui t’aimes en retour, profite juste de l’amour.
JJ : Avez-vous l’impression de tomber amoureux un tas de fois ? Pouvez-vous aimer plusieurs personnes en même temps ?
Bill : Bien sûr. Tom a aimé tous les soirs beaucoup de filles quand il était plus jeune. (rit) Il était, tu étais plutôt rebelle. Maintenant, il est en quelque sorte rangé. Cette période était plutôt quand il avait 16, 17 ans.
Tom : Tout le monde l’a fait à cet âge.
Bill : Pas moi.
Tom : Si.
Bill : Non. J’ai l’impression d’être l’opposé. Quand je tombe amoureux, je tombe vraiment amoureux. Et après, j’en suis sûr. Mais cela prend un moment jusqu’à ce que cela arrive. Donc oui, je ne suis pas comme ça, je ne suis pas le genre de garçon à avoir des aventures d’un soir.
JJ : Pensez-vous qu’il y a une personne dans le monde avec laquelle vous êtes censé être ? Ou pensez-vous qu’il y a plusieurs personnes dans le monde avec qui vous pourriez être heureux ?
Tom : Oh oui, je pense qu’il y a plusieurs personnes. D’après moi.
Bill : Je ne sais pas. J’ai l’impression que c’est très difficile de trouver la personne que vous aimez, votre âme sœur, cette personne avec qui vous voulez passer le reste de votre vie. J’ai l’impression que c’est très difficile car il y a des milliards de gens dehors et j’ai juste le sentiment que trouver cette personne est quasiment mission impossible. Et j’ai l’impression qu’il faut être chanceux. J’ai l’impression que les gens pensent avoir trouver la bonne personne et pensent ensuite qu’ils en sont fou amoureux, jusqu’à ce qu’ils rencontrent vraiment leur amour. J’ai donc le sentiment que vous ne pouvez pas aimer plusieurs personnes.
Tom : J’ai l’impression que ça peut arriver un tas de fois. Beaucoup de personnes ont des relations sérieuses et sont vraiment amoureux…
Bill : Mais ce que je dis, c’est que tu es une personne.
Tom : Oui, je ne sais pas. C’est juste un scénario de rêve…
Bill : Ce n’est pas un scénario de rêve, ça existe. J’ai le sentiment que ça existe. J’y crois.
Tom : Bien, non. Bien sûr, il est possible de trouver la personne que vous aimez et avec qui vous passerez le reste de votre vie, mais vous ne savez jamais.

JJ: Do you know what your next single is going to be?

Bill: Yeah, in Europe it’s going to be “Feel It All”, and in America, we are still undecided, because we are still working with “Love Who Loves You Back.” But in Europe and the rest of the world, it’s going to be “Feel It All”.

JJ: Outside of music, would you guys ever act? Have you ever been offered any acting projects?

Bill: Yes, actually Tom and I were offered a movie awhile ago. But then the whole movie industry was so slow.

Tom: I thought music is slow, but movies, that’s crazy. No, but we got an offer for a movie…

Bill: To play brothers.

Tom: To play brothers. And I liked the concept.

Bill: We’re still trying to make that work.

Tom: It’s just so weird because I hate when musicians try to act, and when actors try to do music. Most of the time it’s just stupid.

Bill: But we want to try that. (both laugh)

Tom: But maybe we can make an exception. Maybe it’s good when we do it. I don’t know. I’m still not sure about it. We had a lot of test shoots already.

Bill: Yeah, we had that a while ago.

Tom: That was awkward.

Bill: They said I am a natural talent. (laughs)

JJ: Is there a scripted American television show that you guys would want to guest star on?

Bill: Breaking Bad, but that’s not on anymore. House of Cards!

Tom: House of Cards would be amazing.

Bill: I love House of Cards. I would do anything to be on that show. I love that show.

JJ: You guys are obviously very into fashion. Are there any new designers on the scene that you have been wearing?

Bill: Not new. I’m totally into Givenchy. I love everything they do. I think everything is amazing.

Tom: We really like KTZ.

Bill: I really like KTZ, yeah they are kind of big now. Yeah, these are my favorites at the moment.

JJ: What is your favorite place to shop in LA?

Bill: All the stores on Fairfax now. They are all the new stores I like.

Tom: Church is cool.

Bill: Church I like. I like Oak. I like all these small little stores. And then of course, I always love Barney’s.

Tom: Barney’s yeah! I love Barney’s. (both laugh)

JJ: Would you guys ever start your own clothing line?

Bill: Oh yeah! It’s my dream. I want to do that so bad. Ever since, like I started when I was super young too, like make my own t-shirts and stuff. Because I had no money, so I just bought like cheap stuff and then made like a new piece out of it. My mom was into that too, so she kind of always helped me out. And I started to sketch when I was young, it was always my dream to do that. I have, I already have everything ready. I have a concept and almost like a first collection. I’m just kind of waiting for the right moment. I feel like when I do it, I want to do it properly, and not being a celebrity that just puts their name on something. I want to do the real thing.

Tom: You can do it when I do my DJ project.

JJ: What kind of aesthetic do you think that clothing line would have?

Bill: I like all the old stuff. Like, baroque, combined with modern, new fabrics and styles.

JJ : Connaissez-vous le nom de votre prochain single ?
Bill : Oui, en Europe, ça va être « Feel It All », et en Amérique, nous sommes encore indécis car nous travaillons encore avec « Love Who Loves You Back ». Mais en Europe et pour le reste du monde, ça va être « Feel It All ».
JJ : En dehors de la musique, ne voudriez-vous pas jouer la comédie ? Vous a-t-on déjà offert des projets d’acteur ?
Bill : Oui, en fait, on a proposé un film à Tom et à moi il y a quelques temps. Mais après, toute l’industrie cinématographique était si lente.
Tom : Je pensais que la musique était lente, mais les films, c’est dingue. Non, mais nous avons eu une offre pour un film…
Bill : Pour jouer des frères.
Tom : Pour jouer des frères. Et j’ai bien aimé le concept.
Bill : Nous essayons encore de faire ce travail.
Tom : C’est tellement bizarre car je déteste quand des musiciens essaient de jouer la comédie, et quand des acteurs essaient de faire de la musique. La plupart du temps, c’est juste stupide.
Bill : Mais nous voulons essayer. (rient)
Tom : Mais peut-être que nous pouvons faire une exception. Peut-être que c’est bien quand nous faisons ça. Je ne sais pas. Je n’en suis toujours pas sûr. Nous avons déjà fait beaucoup de séances d’essais.
Bill : Oui, nous avons fait ça il y a quelques temps.
Tom : C’était embarrassant.
Bill : Ils ont dit que j’avais un talent naturel. (rit)
JJ : Y a-t-il une série américaine en cours sur laquelle vous aimeriez apparaitre en guest-star ?
Bill : « Breaking Bad », mais elle a été arrêté. « House Of Cards » !
Tom : « House Of Cards » serait formidable.
Bill : J’aime « House Of Cards ». Je ferais n’importe quoi pour être dans cette série. Je l’adore.
JJ : Vous êtes de toute évidence très intéressés par la mode. Y a-t-il de nouveaux designers qui vous intéresse et que vous portez ?
Bill : Non. Je suis vraiment intéressé par Givenchy. J’aime tout ce qu’ils font. Je pense que tout est incroyable.
Tom : Nous aimons beaucoup KTZ.
Bill : J’aime vraiment KTZ, oui, ils sont grands maintenant. Oui, ce sont mes préférés actuellement.
JJ : Quel est votre endroit préféré pour faire des emplettes à LA ?
Bill : Tous les magasins se trouvant sur Fairfax. Ils ont pleins de nouveaux magasins que j’adore.
Tom : Church est chouette.
Bill : J’aime Church. J’aime Oak. J’aime tous ces petits magasins. Et puis, bien sûr, j’aime toujours Barney’s.
Tom : Barney’s oui ! J’aime Barney’s. (rient)
JJ : Voulez-vous un jour démarrer votre propre ligne de vêtements ?
Bill : Oh oui ! C’est mon rêve. Je veux vraiment faire ça. C’est quelque chose que j’ai commencé quand j’étais très jeune, j’ai créé mes propres t-shirts et d’autres trucs. Je faisais cela car je n’avais pas d’argent, j’achetais donc des trucs pas chers et en faisait ensuite de nouvelles pièces uniques. Ma mère était aussi intéressée par cela, elle m’aidait toujours. Et j’ai commencé à faire des croquis quand j’étais jeune, ça a toujours été mon rêve de faire ça. J’ai, j’ai déjà tout préparé. J’ai un concept et j’ai presque une première collection. J’attends juste le bon moment. Quand je mettrais ça en marche, je veux que ça soit fait correctement, et ne pas être une célébrité qui met simplement son nom sur quelque chose. Je veux le faire pour de vrai.
Tom : Tu pourras le faire quand je ferais mon projet de DJ.
JJ : A votre avis, quelle esthétique aura la ligne de vêtements ?
Bill : J’aime ce qui est vieux. Genre, le baroque combiné avec du moderne, avec de nouvelles matières et avec du style.

JJ: What songs are you guys singing in the shower?

Tom: Believe it or not, I don’t sing at all. I don’t sing at all.

Bill: It’s so hard for me to believe that. You sing with me in the car sometimes, when I sing.

Tom: Yeah because, when he sings…

Bill: But he always only sings when I’m singing.

Tom: Yeah. And the funny thing is, I can really hit the right notes when I just sing with Bill. If I would sing by myself, it would sound horrible. Because I never sing, so I think I have an amazing voice, (Bill laughs), I’m just not practicing.

JJ: You have a good singing voice, everything looks perfect on you…

Tom: I’m just a perfect human being. (laughs)

JJ: Do you have any celebrity crushes?

Bill: Okay, there is one, everyone else thinks it’s awkward, but I love Kate Winslet a lot. She’s kind of old for me, but there’s something about her, I just think she’s sexy. And she’s an amazing actress.

Tom: And then you got Rachel McAdams

Bill: Rachel McAdams. Rachel McAdams is always going to be my favorite.

Tom: She’s great.

JJ: What is your ethnic background?

Bill: Uh, we don’t have one. (laughs)

Tom: We actually don’t know.

Bill: I have no idea, actually!

Tom: I would like to find out.

Bill: I would like to find out because people always tell us, like there needs to be something. Something needs to be in there.

Tom: I think Bill looks a little Turkish.

Bill: But I don’t think so! A lot of people say that sometimes, but I don’t think so. I don’t know. I only know that we, like the whole family is German, so I don’t know. But maybe way back somewhere there’s something, I have no idea.

JJ : Quelles chansons chantez-vous sous la douche ?
Tom : Croyez-le ou non, je ne chante pas du tout. Je ne chante pas du tout.
Bill : C’est très difficile pour moi de le croire. Tu chantes avec moi dans la voiture parfois, quand je chante.
Tom : Oui parce que, quand il chante…
Bill : Mais il chante toujours quand je chante.
Tom : Oui. Et le plus drôle, c’est que j’arrive vraiment à atteindre les bonnes notes quand je chante avec Bill. Si je chante tout seul, c’est affreux. Car je ne chante jamais, donc je pense que j’ai une
voix étonnante, (Bill rit), mais je ne m’exerce tout simplement pas.
JJ : Vous avez une bonne voix pour chanter, tout à l’air parfait chez vous…
Tom: Je suis juste un être humain parfait. (rit)
JJ : Avez-vous le béguin pour des célébrités ?
Bill : Ok, j’en ai un, tout le monde pense que c’est embarrassant, mais j’aime beaucoup Kate Winslet. Elle est un peu vieille pour moi, mais il y a quelque chose en elle, je pense qu’elle est sexy. Et c’est une actrice formidable.
Tom : Et puis, tu as Rachel McAdams.
Bill : Rachel McAdams. Rachel McAdams sera toujours ma préférée.
Tom : Elle est géniale.
JJ : Quelle est votre origine ethnique ?
Bill : Euh, nous n’en avons pas. (rit)
Tom: Nous ne savons pas en réalité.
Bill : Je n’en ai aucune idée, en fait !
Tom : J’aimerais le savoir.
Bill : J’aimerais le savoir car les gens nous disent toujours qu’il doit y avoir quelque chose. Qu’il faut faire quelque chose pour être là.
Tom : Je pense que Bill est un peu turc.
Bill : Mais je ne le pense pas ! Beaucoup de personnes disent cela parfois, mais je ne le pense pas. Je ne sais pas. Je sais seulement que toute notre famille est allemande, donc je ne sais pas. Mais il y peut-être quelque part quelque chose, je n’en sais rien.

JJ: Do you have any favorite books? Or books you’re reading right now?

Tom: No.

Bill: I never had a favorite book.

Tom: I always want to convince myself to read. I have so many books because people keep giving me so many books, like, “Oh you have to read that.” And I don’t have the time for it. Like when I have a free minute, I always go to the studio. I wish, I always want to read something good, but I just can’t convince myself.

Bill: I like “Kill Your Friends”, I like it a lot, but I wouldn’t consider it my favorite. But I wouldn’t say that’s my favorite book, I would just say it’s a good book.

Tom: It’s a great book.

JJ: Would you ever write your own book?

Bill: Yeah! I mean, we’re going to do that this year. So maybe that’s going to be our favorite book then. It’s going to be a biography, just like our first 25 years. We are going to write it together. I hope we have the time for it, because we really want to write it.

Tom: We want to try to bring it up obviously.

JJ: Do you think you would have your own individual voices in the book or would you write it together to create one voice?

Tom: I think individual.

Bill: Yeah, individual. I think there are some stories you can tell better than me, and the other way around.

JJ: Part one of your world tour, what can people expect?

Bill: So this is going to be way different than anything we’ve ever done so far. It’s going to be like super small, special, nightclubs or clubs, like life clubs. But sometimes we play in like a church, so it’s either in a special location or a legendary club. And we actually want to put on, like not a normal live show. We want to try turn this into a nightclub. We really want to take our fans to a party. So I think it’s going to be great.

Tom: We’re in the middle of putting everything down right now. There’s going to be a crazy light show.

Bill: It’s going to be a good light show, and it’s going to be small, just up to like two thousand people, I think. And then we’re going to continue, like later on this year, we’re going to do the arena shows, the bigger shows. But we’re going to start with that, it’s exciting. We announced the first fifteen dates, I think? And then we are just going to continue.

Tom: It’s going to be really intimate, and super hot. It’s little venues, and sweating people.

JJ: Do you style yourselves, or do you work with costumers? How does the look come together for all your concerts?

Bill: I always try to work with someone on tour. For the last two, I worked with Dan and Dean from DSquared. And we made the costumes together, they turned out amazing. I love to work with them, they’re so much fun. So I always like to work with someone for tour. This time, I, it looks like we’re going to work with Marco Marco. He’s going to do the costumes. I just had my first meeting, so it’s still very fresh, but I think we’re going to work together.

JJ: Do you have any rituals before you go out on stage?

Bill: Yeah, we activate our (together) Power Ranger power. (laughs) It’s a stupid thing, we all stand together and activate our powers. It’s super cheesy but we do that every time.

JJ : Avez-vous des livres préférés ? Ou des livres que vous êtes en train de lire en ce moment ?
Tom : Non.
Bill : Je n’ai jamais eu de livres préférés.
Tom : J’essaie toujours de me convaincre de lire. J’ai tellement de livres car les gens m’en donnent sans cesse en me disant : « Oh, tu dois lire ça ». Et je n’ai pas le temps pour ça. Quand j’ai une minute de libre, je me rends toujours au studio. J’aimerais, je veux toujours lire quelque chose de bien, mais je n’arrive pas à m’en convaincre.
Bill : J’aime « Kill Your Friends », je l’aime beaucoup, mais je ne le considérerais pas comme étant mon préféré. Mais je ne dirais pas que c’est mon livre préféré, je dirais juste que c’est un bon livre.
Tom : C’est un très bon livre.
JJ : Aimeriez-vous un jour écrire votre propre livre ?
Bill : Oui ! Je veux dire, nous allons le faire cette année. Il se peut donc que celui-ci soit notre livre préféré. Ca va être une biographie consacrée à nos 25 premières années. Nous allons l’écrire ensemble. J’espère que nous aurons le temps pour faire cela parce que nous voulons vraiment l’écrire.
Tom : Il est évident que nous voulons essayer d’aborder le sujet.
JJ : Pensez-vous que vous aurez vos propres voix personnelles dans le livre ou aimeriez-vous l’écrire ensemble pour créer une même voix ?
Tom : Je pense que nous aurons notre voix personnelle.
Bill : Oui, personnelle. Je pense qu’il y a des histoires que tu peux raconter mieux que moi, et inversement.
JJ : A quoi peuvent s’attendre les gens de la première partie de votre tournée mondiale ?
Bill : Bien, celle-ci sera bien différente de tout ce que nous avons fait jusqu’ici. Elle sera très petite, spéciale, donnant l’impression d’être dans une boite de nuit ou dans un club. Mais parfois, nous jouerons dans une église, donc ça sera soit dans un endroit spécial, soit dans un club légendaire. Et nous voulons préciser que ça ne sera pas comme un spectacle normal. Nous voulons essayer de transformer celui-ci en une boîte de nuit. Nous voulons vraiment emmener nos fans à une fête. Donc, je pense que ça va être génial.
Tom : Nous sommes maintenant en plein dans la mise en place. Il va y avoir un spectacle de lumière complètement dingue.
Bill : Ça sera un bon spectacle de lumière, et ça sera petit, juste ce qu’il faut pour deux mille personnes, je pense. Et puis, nous continuerons plus tard dans l’année, où nous ferons des concerts dans de grandes salles, avec des spectacles plus grands. Mais nous allons commencer avec la première partie, c’est excitant. Nous avons annoncé les quinze premières dates, je pense ? Et puis, nous allons tout simplement continuer.
Tom : Ça va être vraiment intime et très chaud. Ca se déroule dans de petits lieux et les gens vont
transpirer.
JJ : Vous occupez-vous personnellement de votre style, ou est-ce que vous travaillez avec des costumiers ? Comment combinez-vous le look pour tous vos concerts ?
Bill : J’essaie toujours de travailler avec quelqu’un en tournée. Pour les deux dernières, j’ai travaillé avec Dan et Dean de DSquared. Et nous avons fait les costumes ensemble, qui se sont avérés géniaux. J’aime travailler avec eux, ils sont tellement amusants. J’aime toujours travailler avec quelqu’un durant la tournée. Cette fois-ci, il semblerait que nous allons travailler avec Marco Marco. C’est lui qui va faire les costumes. Je viens d’avoir une première réunion avec lui, donc c’est encore tout frais, mais je pense que nous allons travailler ensemble.
JJ : Avez-vous des rituels avant de monter sur scène ?
Bill : Oui, nous activons (ensemble) notre pouvoir de Power Ranger. (rit) C’est une chose stupide, nous nous unissons tous et activons nos pouvoirs. C’est très kitsch, mais nous le faisons à chaque fois.
