Question: What’s new with that album?
Bill: Concerning the music we did entirely new things, after the last album we actually didn’t quite know what we wanted to do. We just wanted to make an album, which we also find amazing ourselves and wanted to make music which we listen to and like at the moment. There was an extreme influence by the party life, by going out, by DJs.. it became quite electronic, and we also produced the album ourselves for the first time. And we just did things we had never done before, because we finally had the time for doing that.
Question: Why is your album called “Kings of Suburbia”?
Bill: We just thought that the title was cool, we had the idea as we were in the car and on our way to Georg and Gustav. And our rehearsal room is in the suburbs as well…
Tom: Everything’s in the suburbs, we grew up in the suburbs, LA is still a suburb, we live there at the moment..
Bill: We just have that extreme ghetto-suburb-background… and sometimes we have that great feeling, that feeling of self-consciousness, when we’re in our rehearsal room and rehearse our songs and you just think “Wow, everything’s so amazing”, but when you look at it from above and you see all those billions of people, then it doesn’t mean anything of course, because everyone has their own universe and priorities. But nevertheless it’s an important feeling and that’s what we had when we were recording the album, and therefore “Kings of Suburbia”.
Question: How do you like the Video for “Love who loves you back” yourselves?
Bill: We all are extremely happy with that and I think it’s a really beautiful, aesthetic and cool video… I actually already wanted to shoot such an orgy, so to say, much earlier.. and for “Love who loves you back” it was of course just perfect. When we recorded the song, I immediately knew “okay, that will be the song for the video” and then we found the right director and could finally implement it.
Question: How was it for the other guys – besides Bill – at the set?
Bill: Highly erotic.
Tom: Highly erotic, yeah. Pure erotic at the set, so to say. Nah, we only watched. But to be honest, we didn’t envy him for that. I think we just were quite glad that we didn’t have that much tongue in our faces.
Question: Do you also want to sing in english in the future?
Bill: I think we’ll do a lot of songs in english in the future, like on the new album. Because when you’re living there [in LA], of course you also start to write in English, I also already noticed that on the last tour, that I really like to sing in english as well and that I actually like it more. But it can change of course. For example there were songs from the last album which I liked better to sing in german. It doesn’t always work in both languages. That permanent translating is just a bit annoying.
Question: Will LA remain your home?
Tom: Well, right now we actually don’t think about where we privately live. We’ll be on tour for so long again, so that it doesn’t matter anyway. I think next year we’ll tour the entire year, we’ll be sleeping in the tourbus and set up shop there. So, I think we’ll stay in LA for now, we have a house there and I think it will stay like that for now.
Question: What do you miss when you’re in LA?
Tom: Well, when we’re in LA there are a lot of things from Germany that we miss… thinks like german bread, I always really miss the German Autobahn, to drive fast, and of course family and so on.. but we have to say that we always have a full house in LA. We always have friends or family over, someone’s always there. That means we’re actually doing quite well.

Le trois octobre a vu le jour le quatrième album de Tokio Hotel, „Kings of Suburbia“. Dans une interview exclusive, les jumeaux Bill et Tom Kaulitz, qui ont fui à L.A., révèlent ce qui leur manque de l’Allemagne et comment les choses se sont passées lors du tournage de « Love Who Loves You Back ».

Qu’est-ce qui est nouveau dans cet album ?
Bill : Nous avons fait de nouvelles choses musicalement. Après le dernier album, nous ne savions plus du tout ce que nous voulions faire. Nous avons voulu composer un album que nous aimons et de la musique que nous écouterions aussi nous-mêmes et que nous trouvons bien. L’album a été très influencé par notre vie de fêtes, nos sorties, les DJs. C’est devenu très électronique ; et nous avons aussi produit les chansons nous-mêmes, pour la première fois. Nous avons fait beaucoup de choses que nous n’avions jamais faites auparavant, simplement parce que nous avions enfin le temps pour ça.
Pourquoi votre album s’appelle-t-il « Kings of Suburbia » ?
Bill : Nous avons trouvé ce nom très chouette. Nous avons eu cette idée quand nous étions dans la voiture pour aller chez Georg et Gustav – et notre salle de répétition se trouve également dans la banlieue…
Tom : Tout est dans la banlieue. Nous avons grandi dans une banlieue ; L.A., où nous vivons actuellement, est également une banlieue…
Bill : Nous venons d’un milieu de « ghetto de banlieue ». Et quand nous sommes tous les quatre, pour composer des chansons ou pour répéter, nous avons ce chouette sentiment que tout se passe bien, que tout est génial ; mais bien sûr, si on regarde ça de l’extérieur, ça ne veut absolument rien dire, parce qu’il y a des milliards d’autres êtres humains sur Terre, et chacun a son propre univers et ses propres priorités. Mais c’est quand même une sensation importante, que nous avons ressentie lors de l’enregistrement de l’album. Voilà comment nous sommes arrivés à « Kings of Suburbia ».
Que pensez-vous de votre vidéo de « Love Who Loves You Back » ?
Bill : Nous en sommes tous très heureux. Je pense qu’il s’agit d’une vidéo très belle et esthétique. Cela fait longtemps que je voulais filmer une orgie comme ça, et c’était très approprié pour « Love Who Loves You Back ». Quand nous avons enregistré la chanson, je me suis dit « On va enfin pouvoir faire cette vidéo ! ». Puis nous avons trouvé ce réalisateur et avons enfin pu réaliser ce projet.
Comment s’est passé le tournage pour vous – en-dehors de Bill ?
Bill : Très érotique.
Tom : Très érotique, oui. De l’érotisme pur. Nous avons juste regardé. Mais honnêtement, nous n’étions pas jaloux, nous étions contents de ne pas avoir autant de langues dans la figure.
Allez-vous chanter uniquement en anglais à l’avenir ?
Bill : Je pense que nous allons dans le futur chanter beaucoup en anglais, comme pour cet album. Quand on vit en anglais [à L.A.], on commence à écrire en anglais aussi. Lors de la dernière tournée, j’ai déjà remarqué que j’aime beaucoup chanter en anglais, et que je préfère ça, d’ailleurs. C’est pour ça que nous avons fait cet album dans cette langue. Mais cela peut encore changer. Il y a par exemple des chansons en allemand du dernier album que je préfère dans cette langue et que je préfère chanter en allemand. Mais ça ne fonctionne pas toujours dans les deux langues, et la traduction permanente a commencé à nous énerver.
L.A. restera-t-elle votre patrie d’adoption ?
Tom : Pour le moment, nous ne réfléchissons pas à l’endroit où nous allons vivre, parce que nous sommes à nouveau sur les routes et ça n’a donc pas d’importance. L’année prochaine, nous serons en tournée la majorité du temps, et nous dormirons donc dans le bus de tournée. Mais nous restons pour le moment à L.A., dans la maison que nous avons là-bas.
Qu’est-ce qui vous manque, quand vous êtes à L.A. ?
Tom : Beaucoup de choses venant d’Allemagne nous manquent quand nous sommes à L.A. Par exemple, le pain allemand, l’autoroute, et pouvoir rouler vite ; notre famille, bien sûr. Mais il faut dire que nous avons toujours notre maison remplie de gens, à L.A. Nous avons toujours des amis, de la famille qui nous rendent visite.
